According to my Daily Dose of Wonder from The Awe-Manac by Jill Badonsky, today is National Play-Doh day. I must have sensed this in the force, because last night The Hobbit and I made homemade cooked playdough. We used the Martha Stewart Cooked Playdough recipe, which is easy and fast to make with some pretty common items from the pantry. If you’d like to make some of your own, here’s the recipe:
2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups water
1 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
food coloring, flavored extract, jello or Kool Aid for coloring
Add all ingredients to a medium size sauce pan over medium heat. Stir constantly (and I do mean constantly). This thickens VERY quickly.
Pour the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead.
Add color, flavor and/or fragrance. We use liquid food coloring and mint extract because it’s what I keep on hand, but Kool Aid (the packets without sugar) and Jello can be used to add color and fragrance.
Store in a plastic covered container or zip lock bags.
